Weekly Studies

A great study tonight with a great attendance. What a blessing it was.

Tonight’s topic of study was “The Godly Man as Christ’s Representative – Finding God’s Will”. We studied the principles concerning the Will of God and discovering His will. We learned at the core of it is these 5 things:

  1. Prayer
  2. The Word
  3. Circumstances
  4. Godly Council
  5. Peace

After the study it was off to the hospital to pray for our brothers in need.

A great bible study tonight, we continued our topic of sin.

We only made it through a few scriptures tonight as we dove very deep into them and it there was really great discussion about them.

John 3:16 (NKJV) 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

1 John 5:17 (NKJV) 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

Galatians 5:19-21 (NKJV) 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[a] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders,[b] drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

James 1:15 (NKJV) 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

After words we made a prayer run to Baylor Irving to visit two people and pray for them. What a great way to be blessed and spend an evening!!!

Tonight instead of regular bible study we had more of a Fellowship Night to celebrate Pastor Gary’s birthday this week. It was a great way to surprise him, which is generally very hard to do however, his wife Rosie pulled it all together and a great time and cake was had by all.

This week we continued our study of Sin. It was a great discussion with so much discussion on our scripture verses we were only able to cover a couple.

James 4:7 (NKJV) – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 John 3:4 (NKJV) – Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

This week we continued our study of Lying and Lies.

Psalms 63:11 (NKJV) – 11 But the king shall rejoice in God; Everyone who swears by Him shall glory; But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.

Proverbs 10:18 (NKJV) – 18  Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

Proverbs 17:4 (NKJV) – An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.

Proverbs 19:5 (NKJV) – A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape.

Proverbs 19:9 (NKJV) – A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies shall perish.

Proverbs 19:22 (NKJV) – 22 What is desired in a man is kindness, And a poor man is better than a liar.

Proverbs 25:18 (NKJV) – 18 A man who bears false witness against his neighbor Is like a club, a sword, and a sharp arrow.

1 Timothy 1:8-10 (NKJV) – But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

Revelation 21:8 (NKJV) – But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Revelation 22:13-15 (NKJV) – 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” 14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But[outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.

This week we began a study on Lying and Lies. We wound up in such a deep discussion we only got our first scripture done. Great evening and great discussion.

We opened by noting that God is not able to lie: Titus 1:2 (NKJV)  – in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)

16These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

Yet another great study tonight!

2 Timothy 1 (NKJV)

Greeting

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ[a] by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, a beloved son:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Timothy’s Faith and Heritage

I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.[b] 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

Be Loyal to the Faith

13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

15 This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. 18 The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me[c] at Ephesus.

Great study this evening. Make sure to join us next week as we start 2 Timothy.

Here is tonight study for anyone who could not make it.

1 Timothy 6 (NKJV)

Honor Masters

Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

Error and Greed

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings[a] of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.[b]

Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain[c] we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The Good Confession

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Instructions to the Rich

17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, 19 storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Guard the Faith

20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

Grace be with you. Amen.

Footnotes:

  1. 1 Timothy 6:5 NU-Text and M-Text read constant friction.
  2. 1 Timothy 6:5 NU-Text omits this sentence.
  3. 1 Timothy 6:7 NU-Text omits and it is certain.

Thank everyone for joining us for a great study last night. For those that missed it here is tonight chapter.

1 Timothy 3

Qualifications of Overseers

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop,[a] he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,[b] but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Qualifications of Deacons

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The Great Mystery

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God[c] was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.

Footnotes:

  1. 1 Timothy 3:1 Literally overseer
  2. 1 Timothy 3:3 NU-Text omits not greedy for money.
  3. 1 Timothy 3:16 NU-Text reads Who.

Really great study tonight, lots of discussion on the topic.

1 Timothy 2

Pray for All Men

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ[a] and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Men and Women in the Church

I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
